Preparation for Long Backpacking TripsPreparing yourself physically for a long backpacking trip is absolutely necessary. Discovering that you are completed exhausted, miles from your destination is not an ideal situation. In order to determine your fitness, begin by walking and hiking on short hikes close to home. Utilize a pedometer or trail map to find your comfortable daily distance ability along with your pace. Using this information as a guide, plot out your backpack course leaving extra time for resting, snacking and sight seeing. If you have ample time to prepare for a long trek or discover that your current physical condition does not match your backpack goals, begin a training program. Similar to a marathon exercise method, you will want to start with short hikes a couple days a week and gradually work into longer stretches. Keep in mind that you will also be carrying a heavy pack and train with a backpack in place.
